My son is only 5 years old --6 in 2 weeks -- but already he is eying my cuckoo like an osprey eyes a river, with intent and a mind to meddle. And he does often meddle. Pulling the chains and moving a chair over to make the beer drinkers dance. I scold him, of course, and try to instill in him a sense of patience--"The men will dance when its time son, you just have to wait'. But he is incorrigible. And I can't help but want to side with him at times. I want to see the men dance as well. That's why I love the clock. So yesterday when I walked into the room filled with that familiar music of revelry at 14 after 2 I had to laugh when I saw him--once again--standing on the chair, forcing the men to dance. And then it dawned on me. He needs his own kids cuckoo clock. Something whimsical, solidly constructed and cheap. Why cheap? Because I'm going to let him have his way with this one. If he wants to set it off 10 times every half hour, then so be it. It's his and if it keeps his peanut butter stained mits of my delicate creations then its worth it, both to me and to him. So I hunted around and found not only antique cuckoo reproductions that have children or are children inspired, but actual older clocks with children in mind. Take a look at these Ebay auctions below and let your whimsy follow.

Shopping around I spied this very nice One Day Movement -- Leaves and Birds Cuckoo at Bellacor.com. Bellacor has a number of interesting pieces for sale at reasonable prices. I'm not going to stake my reputation that you can't find better deals on Ebay -- which is a true collectors haven for antique cuckoo clocks -- but I still think they are worth checking into for their sales. As I've mentioned before, I'm a big fan of one day movements. I like the daily ritual and I like checking in with my clocks. This piece of wooden simplicity really outlines the classic cuckoo clock demeanor. Elegant, simple, trustworthy.

River City Cuckoo Clocks 18-10 Chalet Style One Day Cuckoo Clock- Woodchopper Chops Wood in the Forest- 10 Inches Tall
Hunting around the this morning and came across this great clock from River City Clocks for $343. RCC has a long storied history of designing and building great clocks. This one is currently $120 of the listed price. The seller is called 'Unbeatable Sale', I'd say this deal is pretty unbeatable. I'll do some research into the the website seller and see what I can find out about the reputation. If its good, you might see some more deals from them in the years to come posted here.

There is nothing finer than a well tuned Cuckoo Clock chirping on the wall at the appropriate hour. Throw in a few birds, a deer, perhaps a crossed set of guns at the top and you have an old fashioned Jagdstuck clock ready to whirl-away the hours. But, one feature that always brings down the house and stands out among the many amazing and beautiful antique cuckoo clocks are the beer drinkers. A classic staple for anyone that has watched (and re-watched) bugs bunny cartoons over the years, the beer drinkers cuckoo clock holds no equal. People delight at seeing the figures rotate out of the doors seemingly on their walk back to their chalet, taking long gulps or short sips along the way. Even better--getting hit over the head expectantly. Check out these antique cuckoo clocks with beer drinker auctions at Ebay.

Anton Schneider began producing cuckoo clocks in 1848 at his farm house in Schonach, Germany. The Anton Schneider Cuckoo Clock Company is now in their 6th generation and has been producing high value cuckoo clocks at their current location since 1952. The market is filled with these classic clocks, but for good reason. They were very popular and widespread throughout the world. In terms of a black forest clock you would do well to grace the wall of your home with one of these wooden masterpieces. But don't take my word for it. The images speak for themselves.

Mention Antique Cuckoo Clocks to the general public and more than likely you will get back a wide smile and a descriptive vision of warmth, wood and whimsy. More than likely the vision of Black Forest clocks will come with the idea of the musical dancers. The slotted, mechanical movement of wenches and lumberjacks, hunters and revelers. These--almost as much as the cuckoo itself--pronounce the characteristics of the fabled cuckoo clock. Take the time to browse these musical cuckoo clocks with dancers on Ebay.

There are articles on the web that antique cuckoo clock sales are on the rise and well worn cuckoo clock is making a comeback. About time I say. Technology can make our lives easier (not simpler), but the organic lull of the tick and tock that a cuckoo clock provides is gentler on the soul, unlike the omnipresent, subconscious hum of today's technological time pieces. No one ever slapped a cuckoo clock upon waking for work in the morning. Coincidence?
If Black Forest cuckoo clocks are making a comeback then you can bet the bridge to grandmothers house that the mini cuckoo clock will become a household desire to lead the pack. Take the warmth and design of the traditional cuckoo clock and make it smaller. It's petite. It's cute. It's a marvel. The presence of a miniature cuckoo clock adds a measure of earthiness without stealing the attention of the entire room. It can work with your decor while not overwhelming it. And what could be better? Take a gander at these Mini cuckoo clock auctions on Ebay.

Hunting around on Ebay is a great pastime for collectors. I'm really starting to enjoy the Jagdstuck styles--with the animals and the foliage. What's more are the musical songs that come with many of these hunting themed clocks. It would be nice if the folks selling the clocks could post a video so we could hear the song of the clock. I'm sure the music is amazing and airy--mechanical, but sweet. Check out these Musical Cuckoo Clock auctions on Ebay and see if a song catches your ear.

Jagdstuck, traditional, 8-day movement clocks are by far, my favorite of all cuckoo clocks. I really like the black forest hunting clock motif and style. And of course an 8 day movement is more in line with a modern lifestyle--not to put down the 1-day movements. I often have to wonder what my friends think when they see me tending to my cadre of clocks throughout the house. Most comment out-right that such a device seems too complicated and time consuming to worry about--we do have electricity now-a-days--why not use a modern clock instead of winding and pulling every day? What they don't understand is that owning an antique cuckoo clock isn't about having a time piece--it's about having time. It's about taking the time to tend, to think, and to ponder. Taking time is something that we don't all do on a regular basis. I've found that my clocks give me the time to sit and relax--to slow down for just one moment. And those are good moments indeed.
A mixture of 1-day and 8-day movement clocks will give you the time throughout your week to think about where you're going and where you've been. Spend that time wisely.

Antique Cuckoo clocks are more than just a time piece. Beneath each wooden case lies not only a mechanism of magic and illusion, but a rich history of craftsmanship and ingenuity. Black Forest, Jagdstuck, Bahnhausle, Chalet are just a few of the types of cuckoo clocks that exist today. Look around, and take time to marvel at what old world workmanship mixed with whimsy feels like.
